Internet of Things (IOT) – Overview

Authors

This article will give an overview of Internet of Things (IOT) by explaining interesting examples with its applications and everything related to it.

Internet of Things (IOT)

The standard form of IOT is “Internet of things” or also known as “Internet of Everything”. The term “Internet of things” is given by a British entrepreneur “Kevin Ashton“ in 1999.

IOT is referred with the scenario in which various physical objects or things embedded with unique identifiers like sensors, electronics circuits, software, etc. and having the ability to transfer data over a network without any need of human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. It is expected to offer advance connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes beyond machine-to-machine communication and covers a variety of protocols, domains and applications.

It can be used in automobiles with built-in sensors, fire-fighters in search and rescue, heart monitoring implant, etc. These devices collect the useful information or data from various existing technologies and transfer or share those data with other connected devices.

Applications

The ability to network embedded device with limited CPU, memory and power resources means that IOT finds applications in almost every field.

The various applications of IOT are as following.

  • Transportation
  • Manufacturing
  • Media
  • Energy Management
  • Infrastructure Management
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Building & Home automation
  • Medical & healthcare system
  • Large scale deployments

On the other hand, IOT systems could also be responsible for performing actions, not just sensing things. For example, an intelligent shopping system could monitor a specific customer purchasing habits by tracking their mobile phones and could then provide suitable offer for customer to get better feedback and sale as well.

So, the application of IOT is not only restricted to these areas. Other specialised use cases may also exist.

Transportation

In the field of transportation, it can assist in integration of communications, controls, information processing across various transportation systems. It extends to all aspects of transportation systems like vehicle, infrastructure, safety, smart parkin, road assistance and the driver or user.

Manufacturing

The IOT intelligent systems enable rapid manufacturing of new products, dynamic response to product demands and real-time optimization of manufacturing production and supply chain management by networking machinery, sensors and control systems.

Media

The ultimate aim is to serve and convey a message or information that is in line with consumer’s mind set. For example, publishing environments are increasingly tailoring messages (advertisements) and content (articles) to appeal to consumers that has been exclusively gleaned through various data-mining activities.

The media industries process big data in a dual interconnected manner.

  • Targeting of consumers
  • Data captures

Energy management

Energy consumption can be optimized by integrating sensors and actuators systems connected to internet. It is expected that IOT can integrate all forms of energy consuming devices like switches, power outlets, bulbs, televisions, etc. and be able to communicate with the utility supply company in order to effectively balance power generation and energy usage.

Infrastructure management

Infrastructures like bridges, railway tracks, etc. of urban & rural areas can also be managed by monitoring and controlling operation by IOT devices by which quality of service, up-times, costs of operations etc. can be improved.

Environmental monitoring

This application includes utilization of sensors to detect or analyse to assist in environmental protection by monitoring air, water quality, atmosphere, soil conditions, etc.

Building and home automation

In field of Building and home automation, IOT can help by controlling lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, appliances, communication systems, entertainment, home security device to improve convenience, comfort, energy efficiency, and security. Various IOT devices all together can make a smart home.

Medical and healthcare systems

IOT devices can also be used to enable remote health monitoring and emergency notification systems. Various advantages are there like doctors can check their patient’s health on their smartphones even when the patient got discharged from the hospital.

Large scale deployments

There are plenty of on-going planning related to IOT to enable better management of cities and systems by the help of this great IOT. Some plannings are improving air and water quality, reducing noise pollution, increasing transportaion efficiency, smart traffic management, making of knowledge city, etc.

Thank you for your patience 🙂
